Old man and the Sea- Why we still read this book

I think that the novel Old Man in the Sea is still read in many high schools throughout the world because of its timeless theme and its great characters. The theme in this book is perseverance and patience. The old man in this book demonstrates both perseverance and patience as he battles against the biggest marlin of his entire fishing career. The old man battles this huge fish out at sea for three days before the marlin finally is defeated. The author shows how much patience the old man has by having him be out at sea for days only to return with one catch. Most people in today's society are very impatient, and maybe that is one reason we are still reading this book. This book shows that patience is rewarded, and that all good things are worth waiting for. The old man waited three long days for one fish, and in the end he was respected by all the other fisherman who once mocked him and called him unlucky. This book also teaches us a great deal about perseverance. The old man is the most dedicated fisherman I have ever read about, and during this story he is dedicated to catching this fish. The old man perseveres through heat, exhaustion, and pain all for a fish. Once again, many people in today's society would not go through all this hard work and exhaustion for a fish. I think we still read this book today because it can bring a little bit of reality back into this crazy world that we can sometimes get caught up in. It shows us that sometimes you have to work hard and sacrifice a little bit, but in the end it is all worth it. A lot of the books we are forced to read in high school can sometimes seem pointless, but looking back on this one makes me think that there actually is a point to it. This book reveals a timeless message through the old man and I am glad we still read it today.
